Rebirth of William Shakespeare's Othello.

Image
The Guinness book of records listed 410 feature length film and television of William Shakespeare's plays, making Shakespeare the most filmed author ever in any language. Shakespeare through his plays has  illustrated many significant stages of human life,  which is why they're repeatedly studied and enjoyed till date. Shakespearean plays  are universal and were meant for stages, however some of the film directors have adopted them into modern cinema. To study the Pop culture of adaptations, we'll be studying Omkara, a Bollywood remake of Othello directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, which is considered to be the best example of adaptation in Hindi film industry. Othello (The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice) is a tragedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in 1603. The play is based on the story of Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio.  Set in Venice and on the island of Cyprus in the mid-1500s, Othello is the tragic story of a ...

Understanding Marxism Through Literature.

Image
The paper talks about Marxist analysis of ‘Othello, the Moor of Venice’ which will reveal how this literary work mirrors all ways in which individual subjects are subjects of material/historical circumtances and of the repressive ideologies that serve to blind us to the ruling power system. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, political theorist, sociologist, journalist and revolutionary socialist. Marx has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history, and his work has been both lauded and criticized. Marx is typically cited as one of the principal architects of modern social science. Marx's theories about society, economics and politics—collectively understood as Marxism—hold that human societies develop through class struggle. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable th...

Can Subaltern Speak?

Image
In many cultures of the world, women are victims of socio-cultural suppression. In their struggle for women’s freedom, feminists have argued that the plight of women in modern society cannot be attributed to natural or biological factors. Feminists are convinced that women are not inferior to men, and are advocating for autonomy and self-actualization for women in a male dominated society. The title of this paper is inspired from Gayatri Spivak’s work on Subaltern theories. This paper aims to analyze how society tries to maintain its control over minorities, here taking the case of Women, Aborigines and Dalits. Secondly how one can help them get their get voice. In addition to that we will also look into Aboriginal literature, what its form, how it is perused by the world, and what actions have been taken to fight the stereotypes.         Starting with Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak who i...

Friendship in Children's Literature.

Image
'Children's literature' is a term generally used to cover all literature for children and adolescents, including oral literature, such as fairy tales and nursery rhymes, graphic narratives and young adult literature" (Bland, 2013). Friendship is a huge theme in children’s literature for the young audiences. Many books teach moral lessons on how to be a good friend, and how not to be a bad friend. They teach the importance of honesty, trust, mutuality, and compassion. Friendship themed books are perfect for young children because once they start school, they will need to learn how to make friends and maintain a good relationship with their peers.          Authors use their writings as a tool to get their messages about friendship skills out to the younger audiences. Many children’s books are available on the topics of friends, socializing, conversation, and playing together (DeGeorge). Authors who write about friendship hope to ...

Children's Literature in Goa

Image
As the title suggests this paper is based on Children's literature in Goa. The paper aims to discuss how local language can protect through children's literature, secondly what are the problems faced by the people who publish such literature and lastly it will discuss some selected stories. Also in this paper I won't be discussing the elements and history of children's literature as I have discussed them in my other paper.           I would like to start my paper by quoting Sahitya Akademi Award winner Shri Ramesh Veluskar encapsulates the importance of one’s mother tongue beautifully in these words: “A mother tongue for any individual is a natural expression; its spirit comes from within. Every other language that one learns as we grow is an acquired understanding of a new language. The most natural quality of one’s expression will reflect coherently in one’s mother tongue. That is why there is a need to safeguard and replenish...

Review on "A Walk to Remember".

Image
For the first time ever I've come across a novel and a movie adaptation of it, which are equally good. It has become really difficult for me to select one over the other. Now I guess it's enough of me praising these works of fiction and let me state you the reasons why I love both the works.            A Walk to Remember is a novel by American writer Nicholas Sparks, released in October 1999. The novel, set in 1958–1959 in Beaufort, North Carolina, is a story of two teenagers who fall in love with each other despite the disparity of their personalities. A Walk to Remember is adapted in the film of the same name, becoming Sparks' second novel adapted to the big screen after Message in a Bottle in 1999. Sparks sold the film rights to Warner Bros. in December 1998, months before the publication of the novel. The movie was directed by Adam Shankman and produced by Denise DiNovi and Hunt Lowry for Warner Bros.; the film premiered on...
